ODD EATS - Chiang Mai Street Squid
Growing up, my parents wouldn’t let me get up from the dinner table until I tried everything that my mom had made the meal. Even though it’s almost 2020, and parenting trends aren’t the only thing that’s changed over the past 2 decades, I’m thankful for the respect that was taught to me as a child. This has come in handy for me in many ways, and most definitely gotten me into some interesting situations- to say the least. Lucky for me, in many cultures it’s a sign of respect to eat what is offered to you, especially in developing countries where it most likely is a sacrifice to provide for guests.
Because of this, we’re starting a series to introduce some of the hilarious moments involving odd eats while traveling.
To kick this off, let’s jump back to 2015 while I was filming in/around Chiang Mai, Thailand.
One night, we were out filming in a big night market (conveniently just outside of a shoot location). Darin and I were rolling through the market with my camera on a ronin-m for some tracking shots when I noticed the food stalls. Yes, it is pretty typical that I get distracted by food…
I also happen to be a seafood junkie, so I quickly noticed the piles of squid chilling in front of a few vendors. Darin jokingly asked if I wanted some, to which I responded, “of course!”. He then offered to buy it if I would actually eat it… Joke ended up being on him! After eating almost all of it off of the skewer, he mentioned that he only expected me to eat one bite! Whoops!
While this isn’t one I’d call terrible, it’s definitely an ODD EAT!
