Odd Eats- Thiakry
There are not many foods I’ve literally had to choke down in my travels… but there’s definitely been a few. One of these happened while I was out on location in Senegal. Paul & I were out in Diohine filming for an entire day, and while we’d brought some food for ourselves, the village leaders insisted that they feed us. The only problem with this…. all the women were out working the peanut harvest instead of cooking.
The men decided to head into the village searching for something they could feed us without much work… The result was Thiakry which translated means yoghurt with millet. However , we were out in a village that didn’t really have consistent power & we didn’t see the food come out of a cooler. Needless to say, I was instantly ready for some sort of sickness to be the result.
The easiest way to describe it would be some sort of milk/yogurt hybrid as it was thicker than milk, but definitely not full yogurt consistency. Then they put oats into it, which just added a layer of unknown I definitely wasn’t prepared for. Of course, I couldn’t turn it down soooooo… here we went.
I hadn’t even gotten 3 bites down when they came around offering seconds (all the village leaders had finished their first serving already). I didn’t even get to say no thanks before my cup was full again… Couldn’t make that mistake again.
To this day I don’t know how I avoided getting sick, but very quickly downed 2 clif bars afterwards.
