Q: How do you get funding for Doc & NGO work?
A: This one's a big topic to discuss, and I'll likely go into more detail in a separate blog…. I'm working with smaller NGOs, which usually means not having a huge budget, while having the biggest need. I'm regularly looking at a mix of NGO buy-in, private donor base (I'll get into this in a follow-up post), brand sponsorship, and occasionally I'll take a bit of a pay cut to make the project happen.
Q: How do you know so many cool people in the industry?
A: I've been lucky enough to meet & become friends with a lot of really cool people mostly because I've gone out to trade shows (NAB & Photo Plus to name a couple) and various events of the same sort. Then my relationship with Sony has also led to many more friends like @colbybrownphotography, @nateinthewild, @mrhollender, @racheljonesross, @chrisburkard, & @taylorfreesolo. It’s such an amazing opportunity to learn alongside people who have the same work ethic/drive. Check them out!
Q: What do you do when you feel like you’re in over your head?
A: I usually have to get away from screens & technology doing something that takes all my focus. I do crossfit 5-6 days a week usually because it's at least one hour of the day that takes my complete focus. I also love going for 5-6 mile walks in the state park near my house. This lets me gather my thoughts after some separation, and start to re-organize myself.
Q: How do you fit in time to work toward PRs with all your work?
A: My health has become a priority as I've gotten older. Trying to do more crazy adventures takes a toll on the body. Thus, I wake up early and get to the gym as a way to start my day. I've been steadily working towards some goals with strength & have recently been knocking them out.
Q: What are 5 MUST haves for long plane rides overseas?
A: 1. headphones w/ adapters for dual mono & a splitter for emergency sharing
2. water bottle- the cups they give are never big enough to survive the time between drink runs.
3. neck pillow- nap life
4. tums/gasx- that airplane food can be rough sometimes
5. melatonin- because sleep
I may pick up this neck pillow to save space/weight... but I currently have this one…
Q: What’s your most embarrassing on site story?
A: Ummmmm… I was proposed to via possible arranged marriage while buying building materials in a market in Jakarta, Indonesia... The father/shop owner asked my dad if I would marry his daughter via our translator.... super awkward.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: I’m still figuring out this one a bit... Everything's been changing so much that I'm still sorting through my thoughts. Stay tuned!
Q: What’s your favorite kind of pop tart?
A: S’mores... the graham cracker part is exponentially better than any other pop tart
