Gear Review | Sony ECM-B1M Microphone

My first encounter with the latest Sony microphone was during Kando 3.0. A Sony representative let me borrow one to take a few tests in the sponsor pavilion, and without even taking it off Auto settings, I was instantly blown away. The noise isolation tech built into it take it up a level I’ve never seen in testing many other microphones.

When planning for Ethiopia, I knew we needed to have simple/clean audio for our BTS camera that wouldn’t require putting lav mics on everyone. I have also had issues in the past with cables going back from smaller microphones, or accidentally setting the camera down on the plug too long weakening the connection.

The ECM-B1M using the multi-channel connection in a7 series camera’s hot shoe solved all those issues. It also gave us much more variety of options for microphone pick up patterns as needed to ensure getting the best audio possible for upcoming youtube content.

This mic is a game changer for the industry, and I can’t wait to see what it’s capable of as more cameras are released, allowing for the use of digital settings on it.
