What's an NGO?!

Wait, what’s an NGO?

You may think that a Non Profit Organization and a Non Governmental Organization are the same thing! One of the main differences though, is that NPOs are primarily founded with religious or social affiliations (think church missions, alumni, or boys & girls clubs). NGOs are broader & a majority of them include an international mission. Many NGOs are humanitarian in nature, focusing on community health & education, development or environmental issues.  Operational NGOs focus more on development and Advocacy NGOs are organized for promotion of particular causes. In the US alone, there are about 1.5 million NGOs!

How does an NGO differ from a normal business?

NGOs, unlike businesses, operate for purposes other than generating direct profit. Therefore, no part of the monies collected/fundraised/received is given back to members, directors, or management at all. They exist solely for raising funds to give toward their mission/projects.

How do NGOs make money?

NGOs can receive governmental funding, through things like grants, but for the most part they are heavily funded through donations, sponsorships, or member dues. Some NGOs receive a large number of small private donations, even though it is easier to catch wind of larger donations!

Why do we work with NGOs?

Increased awareness of & participation in civic activism is a critical part of changing our world for the better. I have seen first hand how using resources (experiences, skills, training, & funding) can directly impact & improve the livelihood of others, Honestly, there’s no way for me to unsee that. So much so that I essentially changed the framework of the company to focus primarily on supporting NGOs. Yes, donors have a critical role to play in ensuring people can get the assistance, help & the vital services they need, but I also believe in creating lasting change at the ground level through creating a more sustainable life for those we serve. That is why I have partnered with so many NGOs that create relationships with the people we serve!

What are some NGOs have we worked with?

What are some things to look for when trying to support an NGO's cause?

One of the main issues NGOs face is gaining the trust of those who donate to them. Therefore, transparency and accountability are vital when choosing a NGO to support. Look for sales tactics that are honest, correct & provided allocation of funding with proven ethical conduct are all valid considerations. I've said it before on the blog, & I will say it again that authenticity is always a must. The NGOs I have partnered with have proven their commitment to their mission & values, which can be seen clearly every single step of each journey we are on. It's a non-negotiable for me & it contributes to the pride I have in the work we accomplish together!

If you guys have any more specific questions regarding my experience with NGOs, I would love to talk to you about it! Hit me up to start the convo.
