Behind the Scenes
Gear Review | Osee T5+
Something I’ve learned over the years is that when you’re truly out using gear it will eventually break. For the last few years I’ve been using an Atomos Shinobi since it was the only affordable & reliable daylight-viewable monitor available at the time (purchased in 2019). While out filming Higher Ground the hdmi port on this monitor ended up getting damaged & when I contacted Atomos it was going to be around $190 for a new motherboard which would fix the issue….
Gear Review | Sony Fx6
After 5 years of owning a Sony Fs5 mk1, I was starting to want more from a cinema camera as technology began to allow for greater opportunities with new cameras. One of the most important factors in camera equipment purchase decisions relates to size & weight in relation to bringing cameras into really remote parts of the world. While bigger cameras like the Sony Fx9/Venice, RED DSMC 2/Raptor, and Arri cameras make incredible images, they’re just way bigger than I am willing to bring. Not only because there are more logistics to bringing them due to size & amount of batteries/aks for them, but also the $$$ value and bringing equipment internationally.
The Sony Fx6 checked all my boxes for an upgrade… and with it being a very similar form factor to the Fs5 that made the choice a home run. What were those boxes?! Welp… Here we go:
Gear Talk | What's in my photo bag 2023
It’s been a while since I’ve discussed what I’m rolling with in my bag, and well… a lot has changed and at the same time hasn’t. At the core I keep the same concept as I have for quite some time… 2 bodies with 3 zooms. Especially if I’m doing a photo focused project where image stabilized lenses are less important & a better minimum aperture option.
Gear Testing | Filming Bison at Antelope Island State Park
When it comes to preparing for big projects with very specific needs I am a huge advocate of real world situation gear tests. I’ve got a project in the works which will involve paying for flights by the pound of all gear going on the plane… which means everything has to be as compact & lightweight as possible. The following footage was captured while out doing some testing of potential new gear for this project out at Antelope Island State Park.
New Work | Higher Ground- Sundance Mountain Resort
There are ski resorts… and then there is Sundance Mountain Resort. Having now been to 9 of Utah’s 15 ski resorts I find that it has the best all-around views as it doesn’t matter where you are in their 550+ acres to enjoy a fantastic view. On top of that, they have one of the best all-around experiences with their food, lodging, and overall presentation of offerings. Check out this episode of Higher Ground to see just how awesome a place it is!
